Vegan and Cruelty Free Makeup Brands

Today’s blog is a bit different as today’s blog will address those people who are hesitant to use makeup or are insecure about applying makeup because of the reason that it is made up of animal tissues or it is tested on animals.

As the world is advancing, people are getting more aware and hence this issue has become a major concern for the people nowadays because either they support Cruelty-Free Campaigns, or some animal is forbidden in their religion (e.g pig, cow etc) or because they consider the use of animals tissues unhygienic. So all of you who have such concerns, this blog is for YOU.

  • Also, if you are someone who doesn’t care about this stuff, don’t read any further because I am sure after reading this you will have your concerns.

Not many people talk about it but there are many affordable, high-end, drugstore, luxurious and organic brands who formulate cosmetics completely using vegan ingredients or who do not test their makeup on animals at all. I will talk about the list of Vegan and Cruelty-Free Makeup in the blog later but first, let’s talk about the non-veg ingredients.

Firstly, I am inserting the logos used for Vegan makeup & Cruelty-Free makeup below so you can know if the product claims to be Vegan/Cruelty-Free or not.

There are many other logos too but these are the most common ones.
Now let’s talk about the animal origin ingredients that are used to formulate cosmetics. I have listed below 10 common non-veg ingredients that are part of our cosmetics

  1. Ambergris – waxy oil that lines stomach of whales; used in perfumes
  2. Cochineal Dye – collected from cochineal beetles; used in lipsticks and blushes as pigment
  3. Collagen – fibrous protein from animal tissue; used in lip glosses
  4. Estrogen – obtained by extracting urine from pregnant horses; used in perfumes, lotions and creams
  5. Gelatin – boiled skin, tendons, ligaments and bones of animals; used in cream cosmetics and nail stuff
  6. Guanine – found in crushed scales of fish; used in mascaras, lipsticks and nail polishes
  7. Lanolin – excreted as a sweat from wool-bearing mammals; used in lipsticks and makeup remover
  8. Retinol – a potent source of vitamin A, derived from animals; used for anti ageing
  9. Squalene – extracted from the shark’s liver; used in eye makeup and lipsticks
  10. Tallow – rendered animal fat; used in foundations, lipsticks, eye makeup, and makeup bases
Even if you are not one of those who was reluctant to use animal origin makeup, I am sure after reading this you will have your concerns. Now let’s jump into the solution.
